VIRGINIAWords and music by Winston Apple I spent a little time in Virginia a long, long time ago While I was there, I fell in love, but I didn't stick around to watch it grow And depending on which version of the story you choose to believe By the time I pulled out of Virginia, I left behind a part of me Depending on which story you believe She had a plan, I didn't understand I stumbled into her decision She found a way to draw me into her scheme Without my knowledge or permission I let down my defenses She did the same, somewhat warily And it only took one unguarded moment to join our souls for eternity Depending on which story you believe Somewhere to the East of our own little Eden I knew the sun was rising So I loaded up my clothes and my guitar And I headed for the horizon I left behind the life that we had made together Chasing my moment in the sun I thought that our story was already over But it had just begun For a time she claimed that you belonged to me But then she changed her story She found a new love, he was a jealous man And she had no more use for me She put her hand on a Bible and she took an oath She swore she'd tell the truth Still I wonder if she lied when she testified That there was no connection between me and you I just want to know the truth One of these days I need to find my way back to Virginia If she's grown tired of living a lie Maybe you and I can make a new beginning For so long now this cloud of doubt has left me stranded between freedom and regret I keep hoping she'll decide to come clean, but she hasn't yet And it doesn't really matter all that much to me anymore which version of the story is true The truth will either set me free or lead me back to you I just want to know the truth.
